Quarter 4: The Doctor is In!
due: Friday, May 19 (a small group/partner project)
*Select a body system from choices given in class
*Assign roles to group members...
-doctor(a specialist) -patient -other medical professionals
*Create a written "skit" that you will perform (about 4 minutes) that details symptoms, probing questions from physician, medical tests that might be performed, possible treatment suggestions
*Create and share a diagram depicting your system and how this problem impacts it.
---alternative option for students working independently>
Please describe the body system you were assigned along with a problem that might affect this system, symptoms of this condition, modern approaches to treatment, etc. (about 2-3 pages) . Include a diagram of the system and progressive stages of change as it is impacted by the problem. Also cite your sources, as always :)
8th grade projects
Quarter 4: Select from ONE of these two options...
due Friday, May 19
A-It's (actually not) All About Me!
*Snap a selfie of you in some form of ecosystem. (keep in mind that you will need to label certain parts of this photo so try to include as much as possible....you may want to stand back or actually have someone else take it)
*Add labels to your photo showing 5 or more (8+ if you're working with a partner) of the following terms, along with some useful facts about these as they relate to this particular ecosystem. For examples, long leaf pines are producers on the ECMS wooded areas...you might share a few things about their adaptations, threats, ecological importance, native habitats, soil requirements, etc.
-producers -consumers -decomposers -biomass -niche
-carrying capacity -succession -limiting factors - trophic levels -biotic factors -abiotic factors -mutualism -succession
-nitrogen fixing bacteria -population -commensalism
-pioneer species -detritus -climax community -carbon cycling -nitrogen cycling -extinction -endangered -eutrophication -water table -river basin -acidity/pH - generalist vs. specialist -biome
-carbon sink -invasive species - biodiversity
(You may present this in the way that works best for you...poster, Prezi, web site, Google slides, etc.)
B- Build your own Ecosystem
(Please follow instructions shown in option A, but create a model ecosystem-in-a-box in place of the selfie. You can find a lot of materials for this at places like Michaels - I may be able to provide some as well if you ask-- as far as labeling the ecology terms, this might be done using "flags" on toothpicks, or some other method you like.)
